Jewels Cockers - Dottie

This was the day Dottie was rescued.  Look at her hip bones poking out!

    Dottie's story -Jewels Cockers

Jewels Partiline Operator 'Dottie' was born on February 9, 2012 at Julie Nelson's home (owner and breeder of Jewels Cockers) where Julie told me she lived in cage with her mother Annie for 6 1/2 years.

Her sire (father) was Jewels Jagged Edge (Jagger) and her dam (mother) is Joe-Mar's Little Mis Sure Shot (Annie).

Julie told me in Sept 2018 that at 6 years and 5 months old Dottie delivered her first litter of puppies.  Julie said she had tried unsuccessfully to breed her previously but this time it took.

Julie told me that on August 12, 2018 she delivered 6 puppies via c-section and two puppies died.

Julie told me that Dottie couldn't nurse the puppies because she couldn't produce milk.  I believe it was because of her low body weight.

Julie told me that the puppies were nursed by Jewels Cherry On T'Sundae 'Stella' who had also just delivered a litter sired by Conquest's Perfect Storm.

Julie told me that she didn't want to keep Dottie because the c-section had cost her $1700 and she didn't want to spend any more money on her.

I was horrified when I first saw Dottie:

    •  Emaciated
    • Only 16 lbs
    • Sunken sides
    • Bones showing under the skin
    • Unable to jump up on furniture
    • Skittish, jumping at every sound

Today Dottie weighs 20 lbs, jumps up on everything, has a healthy appetite, still a little skittish but much better.

She is a great dog that is grateful for everything she has.  She is loved and has forgotten her old life.

Dottie's mother Annie (Joe-Mar's Little Miss Sure Shot) born April  2007 is pictured here nursing a litter delivered on March 25, 2014.

According to AKC records she has delivered over 6 litters far exceeding the AKC recommendations.

Annie was 7 years old when she delivered this litter.  Julie sent me this picture.

In 2013, I observed,  adult Cocker Spaniel dogs and adult dogs with puppies kept in the type of cages you see here.  All wire, some were 2 ' by 3' and some were  3' by 3'.  Most contained two adult dogs or one adult with a litter of puppies.

The bottom of the cages are wire allowing urine and fecal material to drain to the bottom.  AKC does not recommend this type of flooring for adult dogs or puppies.

Dedicated to Jewels Charmed I'm Sure 'Emily', RIP 12-11-2018
